A great base in Palworld isn't the one that looks best on a screenshot. It's the one that lets your Pals feed themselves, gather what you need, and survive a raid without your intervention. Version 1.0 unlocks more Palbox slots (three total by mid-game), so the smart move is to specialize each: a production base, a resource base, and a launchpad base near a fast-travel point.
For your first base, look for a flat plateau near coal, copper, and Paldium nodes with a water source in range. Skip cliffs — Pals will fall or clip — and skip the very open plains, which draw raid attention. Ignore aesthetic and optimize for node density.
Judge every candidate on the same five criteria
- Flatness of build area — enough usable ground for a Palbox, a feed box, a forge, four work stations, and Pal beds. Cliffs and slopes break pathing.
- Node density in walk range — copper and coal early, Paldium always, and Pure Ore later. If you have to fast-travel out to farm, the base isn't paying for itself.
- Water in range — a stream or lake lets your Watering-role Pal work continuously.
- Raid vector count — every direction attackers can path in is a wall you need to build. Two vectors is manageable; four is a nightmare.
- Fast travel proximity — depositing back and heading out again is fast when a waypoint is close.
Base tiers — what to prioritize per role
Production base
This is where Kindling (smelting), Handiwork (crafting), and Transporting Pals earn their keep. Trade node proximity for flat ground and defensibility — you can haul raw materials in from your resource base, but you can't move a broken production line.
Resource base
Plant this one directly on top of a Paldium cluster or a coal seam. Every Pal here is a Miner or Lumberer. It doesn't need much defense — you'll be back before the next raid — but it does need feed boxes stocked before you leave.
Launchpad base
Small, cheap, and near a well-used fast travel point. One Palbox slot, one Pal, one bed, one storage. The purpose is to teleport in, unload, cook a buff, and leave. Don't overbuild it.
Regions worth scouting first
Palworld's map is huge, and Version 1.0 added Sky Island and the World Tree on top of the Sakurajima and Feybreak areas. For a first base, stay in the starter continent — you'll come back to it for hours. The Feybreak transition zone has excellent flat plateaus with mixed ore that carries you into the 30s. Sky Island bases are visually stunning but murder your Watering coverage. Save the exotic locations for a second or third Palbox.
Raid math — how much wall do you actually need
Palworld raid difficulty scales with your base level, not your player level. A brand-new base is unlikely to see anything scary; a mature production base at level 12+ will start getting hit by mid-tier factions. The rule of thumb: every raid vector needs one wall thickness of solid stone plus one gate. Wooden walls are placeholder. If you're too busy to reinforce, hire an Alpha Pal as a defender and let it do the work.
