Gogmazios Fight Guide (Title Update 4 siege)

◷ 7 min read ◆ Published

Gogmazios is the Elder Dragon added in Title Update 4 (December 16, 2025) and the closest thing Monster Hunter Wilds has to a raid encounter. It is an 8-hunter siege battle, gated behind Hunter Rank 100 and a short quest chain, with an oil-coating mechanic that forces you to switch elements mid-fight. Prepare the right pre-fight loadout and this is the most fun fight in the game; walk in cold and you will cart to a mechanic you have never seen anywhere else in the roster.

✦ Scout's short answer

Bring Fire to strip Gogmazios's tar coating in Phase 1, then swap onto Dragon for Phase 2 and the airborne Phase 3. Slot at least one Hunting Horn or Bow in the party for the gaseous phase. The most common wipe: under-damaging the airborne state. Hit the DPS window or reset the fight.

How to unlock Gogmazios

Gogmazios is post-story, post-grind content. You need Hunter Rank 100 and a clear on the Title Update 4 story mission "A First Cry." Once both are true, two extra missions unlock in sequence:

  1. "An Ancient Resting Place": the introductory Gogmazios encounter.
  2. "Ghosts Pay No Heed to Tomorrow": the full siege. This is the version that repeats.

The siege is online only, and it scales for parties of up to eight: four player hunters plus four Support Hunters. Title Update 4 added Griffin, Nightmist, and Nadia to the Support Hunter roster; Fabius became recruitable during the Festival of Accord: Lumenhymn window. Fill an empty slot with the Support Hunter whose weapon your party lacks, not the strongest overall. Nadia's Light Bowgun covers the gaseous phase when your party has three blademasters.

Pre-fight preparation

The pre-fight loadout matters more here than in any other Wilds hunt because the fight forces two element windows on you.

Weapon picks

  • Fire opener. Great Sword, Bow, or a Fire Dual Blades set strips the tar coating best. A Fire Gogma Artian (Rarity 8 Artian → Gogma Artian at the Smithy) becomes a strong permanent pick.
  • Dragon switch. Once the coating burns off, Dragon element leaps ahead of everything else. Bow and Insect Glaive keep good element uptime; Long Sword is the safest blademaster option.
  • Party sustain. At least one Hunting Horn with Attack Up (L), Divine Blessing, or Health Regen is high-value in a full 8-hunter siege. Cart budgets get tight fast.

Armor and Decoration priorities

  • Fire Resistance / Dragon Resistance: the oil catches fire and the gaseous phase inflicts blights, so stack one or both to at least mid-teens.
  • Divine Blessing: best flat mitigation Decoration for one-shot avoidance.
  • Element Attack +5 on your Artian rolls (Fire on the opener weapon, Dragon on the switch weapon).
  • Stun Resistance: the tail slam and body press hit hard enough to KO on chained landings.

Consumables to pack

Pack Cool Drinks or Hot Drinks for the biome the quest drops you in. Add Nulberries for elemental blight cleanse, Max Potions, a full stack of Mega Potions, and Life Powders if you're running Palico support. Skip Deodorants and other status-cure consumables the fight does not need. The loadout screen is finite.

Phase 1: Melt the tar coating

Gogmazios starts the fight covered in a thick, viscous black substance: the tar coating. In this state, physical damage does poor work and Dragon element rolls off. This is the Fire window: bring the coating up to temperature until it softens, liquefies, then burns off that body part.

Focus Fire hits on the chest and head to strip those hitzones first. When the coating on a part liquefies, the surface goes from matte black to running slick. That's the cue to keep pressure on that part rather than swap. Once it burns off, exposed flesh becomes your Dragon target for the rest of the fight.

Weapon fragments stud Gogmazios's body, remnants of past hunts. Breaking them yields extra materials beyond the standard part-break rewards, so assign one hunter to shatter them during downtime.

Phase 2: Punish exposed flesh

With sections of the coating stripped, Gogmazios starts spraying oil to reset itself. Watch for the Oil Breath cone spray and the Oil Pools it leaves on the ground. Standing in a pool makes you a Fire hazard the next time Gogmazios ignites it. The pools are the biggest source of avoidable damage in this phase.

This is the party's Dragon window. Swap to your Dragon weapon and prioritise the parts you already stripped in Phase 1. The coating regrows unevenly, and exposed parts take Dragon damage hardest. The tail is a middle-value target here: it takes both elements moderately well, and you can sever it.

Gogmazios's moveset also opens up in Phase 2: a heavier tail slam, a body press with a shockwave, and ignited oil explosions when it re-coats and lights the ground. Watch the Palico's animal-shaped icon on the mini-map. Support Hunter aggro warns of an incoming sweep even when you cannot see the tell.

Phase 3: The airborne DPS check

At low HP, Gogmazios burns off the remaining coating and enters a gaseous, airborne state. This is the fight's damage window and its wipe window. Dragon damage on exposed flesh peaks here, and Bow, Bowgun, and Insect Glaive get their strongest windows. Miss the damage window and Gogmazios triggers a large-radius ultimate that can wipe an under-prepared party.

Note: the official patch notes do not state the exact damage threshold or the ultimate's exact behaviour, so verify against your own runs before you plan around them. What every party agrees on: the airborne phase is where clears and wipes are both decided.

Practical rules for the gaseous phase: burn every Palico Vigorwasp and consumable buff you have been sitting on. This is the payoff. Space the party around Gogmazios rather than stacking; the ultimate's radius favours clustered targets. Keep at least one hunter free to res carts rather than push damage.

Breakable parts and rewards

Gogmazios has more breakable parts than any other Wilds monster, and each break rolls its own drop:

  • Head: single break.
  • Chest: single break; the fastest way to expose Dragon-vulnerable flesh.
  • Back: two breaks. The second break exposes the embedded Dragonator-like weapon fragment.
  • Wings: two breaks total across both wings.
  • Tail: break once, then sever.
  • Weapon fragments: visible extras scattered across the body; each shatter drops materials.

Materials feed the Gogma armor line, Palico equipment, and Gogma Artian Weapons. Gogma Artian Weapons are the upgrade target for existing Rarity 8 Artian Weapons. A Fire or Dragon roll on your main weapon becomes a permanent endgame pick.

Common wipes to watch for

  • Under-damaging the airborne phase. The most common cause of a full siege wipe. Save your buffs and Wound explosions for this window.
  • Standing in an oil pool during ignition. Roll clear the moment Gogmazios starts an oil-breath spray. Fireblight on a pool ignites everyone standing in it.
  • Chained tail slams during a KO. If a stun lands you flat, one clean hit becomes three. Stun Resistance solves this.
  • Wrong element window. Swinging a Dragon weapon at the fully-coated Phase 1 body is roughly the worst DPS you can log in the game. Match the phase.

What to farm next

Once you're on repeat clears, the natural progression: farm Gogma Artian upgrades for your two element weapons, rotate into Arch-Tempered Jin Dahaad for its own high-HR gear line, then wait for the Ascendance expansion (announced for 2027). Gogmazios is the endpoint of the base game; nothing in the current roster hits harder.
