Nightreign compresses an entire Elden Ring playthrough into a forty-minute run: land on Limveld with nothing, fight to level up before nightfall, and face a Nightlord on day three. It looks like chaos the first five times. This guide covers the structure underneath — what each day is for, who to pick, and where new trios lose their runs.
Pick Ironeye, stay within sprinting distance of your trio, and spend day one hitting churches (flask charges) and one fort (gear and runes) before the circle closes. Levels beat skill in your first ten runs — route well and the bosses shrink.
How a run works
Every expedition follows the same clock. Day one: drop in, loot, level, and fight a night boss when the rain closes to its center. Day two: the same loop on a tighter circle with a harder boss. Day three: no more farming — you fight the Nightlord you selected at the expedition board. The closing ring of rain damages you inside it, so every minute is a trade between one more landmark and arriving at the boss early.
Death is graduated. Downed players revive when teammates deal damage to them; a full health-bar loss costs a level and your held runes, and only a trio wipe ends the run. Between expeditions you return to the Roundtable Hold to spend what persists — more on that below.
Your first Nightfarer
Start with Ironeye. Ranged damage keeps you alive while you learn boss patterns, his mark helps the whole trio, and his dash forgives positioning mistakes. Wylder is the equally good melee answer — balanced kit, a grapple, and a passive that cancels one death per rest. Avoid Duchess, Recluse, and Scholar until you have runs behind you; all three assume knowledge or coordination a first-week player doesn't have yet. The full rankings live in the Nightfarer tier list.
Day one: route, don't wander
Day one decides the run. The priorities, in order:
- Churches — each one adds a flask charge. Two extra charges is the difference between surviving the day-two boss and feeding it.
- A fort or great church — concentrated runes, a weapon upgrade, and often a boss with a guaranteed drop. One is enough; two costs boss-arrival time.
- Sites of grace — level immediately, every time you pass one. Held runes help nobody, and death taxes them.
Skip large field bosses on day one unless your trio is ahead of the curve — a three-minute fight for one reward is bad routing math while the circle shrinks. Aim to reach the first night boss at level 7 or higher, and the second around level 12. Under those bars, prefer more looting over earlier fighting.
Nights and the Nightlord
Night bosses spawn at the circle's center, and the fights borrow Elden Ring's vocabulary — learn openings, punish recovery, share aggro. Day three is different in kind: Nightlords have full multi-phase kits, and each carries an elemental weakness shown when you select the target at the expedition board. Bring the matching damage type and the fight shortens by phases, not percentages. Your first target, Gladius, Beast of Night, is the tutorial in trio discipline: stay spread, revive fast, and hold burst for the windows after his combos end.
Between runs: what persists
Levels and gear reset every expedition. Three things don't:
- Relics — passive bonuses you slot into colored rite chalices per Nightfarer. This is Nightreign's real progression; even failed runs award them.
- Murk — the persistent currency. Spend it at the Hold on relic draws and unlocks.
- Remembrances — each Nightfarer's personal questline, which unlocks lore and rewards as you complete objectives across runs.
A failed expedition that banks relics and murk still moves you forward. The game expects you to lose Nightlord attempts; the meta-progression is tuned around it.
The five mistakes that end new runs
- Splitting from the trio. Limveld's enemies scale for three. A solo detour that downs you costs the team a revive trip across the circle.
- Sitting on runes. Level at every grace. Unspent runes are a death tax waiting to be collected.
- Skipping churches. Flask charges compound across both nights. No single piece of gear beats two extra heals.
- Fighting everything. The circle is the real enemy. If a fight doesn't pay in levels, gear, or flask charges, walk away.
- Ignoring the weakness hint. Nightlord weaknesses aren't trivia — they gate phases. Check the board, and grab a matching weapon during the run.
